Cape Town - Serena Williams has revealed her dad pulled out of walking her down the aisle, a mere hour before her wedding.

And he only told her via text message!

The tennis champion, who married Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian in November 2017, told Vogue magazine that her father and coach, Richard Williams, decided one hour before the nuptials that he wasn’t going to walk by her side.

“He was in New Orleans, he had a suit and I know he was really excited,” she explained in her new HBO documentary titled Being Serena.

“But then he wrote me and said: ‘Serena, I don’t want you to be mad at me, but I just can’t walk you down the aisle. I’m not myself any more. I’m just too nervous.’”

Serena says that despite it coming at a bad time, she remained calm and was supportive of her father’s decision.

“Daddy, it’s okay, if you don’t want to come to the wedding at all, that’s okay too,” the 36-year-old texted him.

“I’m not going to be upset with you about it, so I don’t want you to be upset about it.”

Serena said she understood why he pulled out and that her dad had been through a lot, including suffering a stroke in 2016.

“If he doesn’t want to be up there in front of a lot of people, I completely understand.”

Serena – who shares a daughter, Alexis Olympia, with her husband – walked down the aisle alone.

Her revelation comes just days after Meghan Markle’s dad pulled out of walking her down the aisle at this weekend’s royal wedding.
