Cape Town – Serena Williams is one Badass woman, so it’s no wonder that she features in InStyle magazine’s first ever Badass Women issue.
To the pro tennis player, a badass woman is “incredibly confident and unapologetically herself. And she doesn’t care what anyone else says — but in a positive, not a negative, way. It’s more like standing up for yourself and others.”
And make no mistake Serena is all that and more.

Speaking to InStyle’s Laura Brown, the 36-year-old says that the top most badass thing she has done is winning the Australian Open while pregnant.
“I was two months pregnant. I was literally nine weeks by the end of the tournament. I was almost done with my first trimester.
“Every day that passed I thought, 'This is a dream’… And by the time the quarter-finals came, I was like, 'I know I can beat this girl,' and at the semi-finals I thought, ‘I know I can win this match.’ I didn't think I would win the final, so when I won, it was like, ‘OK, this is crazy.’”
Serena is preparing to take the court for Wimbledon - which starts on 2 July - after having to withdraw from the French Open earlier this month due to a pectoral muscle injury, but says if she wasn’t working she’d be pregnant.
“If I weren’t working, I’d already be pregnant. I hear everyone’s different, but I had a really easy pregnancy until the birth.”
The grand slam winner recently opened up to Vogue magazine about suffering serious health scares shortly after the birth of her daughter, Alexis Olympia.

Health scares aside, Serena shared that she doesn’t think she’d like to continue playing tennis if she has a second child.
“I don’t know if I want to play if I have another baby, but you’re right. I need to talk to Alexis. We need a plan.”
This adding to the fact that Serena’s main concern when she takes the court is baby Alexis.
“Mostly things about Olympia. Like, is she OK? What is she doing? Did she fall? Did she sit?”
