Hiannick Kamba, who was pronounced dead in 2016, is making headlines – now, because he's been found, alive.

The Congolese soccer star was a former defender for FC Schalke 04 in the German Bundesliga league. He was playing for VfB Hüls when he was pronounced dead after a car crash four years ago.

According to People, German prosecutor Anette Milk confirmed that Hiannick, now 33 years old, is alive.

"Mr Kamba has recently returned to Germany. There are no reasonable doubts about his identity," she said, adding that "an investigation into fraud is underway" against his wife who is denying the charge.

The prosecutor said she received "a low seven-digit amount (in euros)" after Hiannick was thought to have died. She is being accused of allegedly forging documents, including his death certificate, to collect on a life insurance policy, reports German newspaper, Bild.

According to Hiannick's account of what happened, on the night in question, he was with "companions" who "had left him during the night while on a trip to the interior of the Congo in January 2016". He allegedly told authorities that they "took his papers, money and telephone".

Four years later he was found in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, where he'd returned to work, but as a chemical technician for an energy supply company.
