Cape Town - When a celebrity couple decide to call it quits there’s more than a broken heart on the line – there’s usually a lot of money at stake, too!
And if the couple didn’t sign a prenup things can get messy.
HERE ARE SOME OF THE MOST EXPENSIVE CELEBRITY DIVORCES:
1. Alec Wildenstein and Jocelyn Wildenstein: $3.8bn (R55bn)
One of the costliest divorces ever was when French-American businessman and art dealer Alec Wildenstein divorced his wife of 21 years in 1999.
The divorce proceedings resulted in Jocelyn being awarded $2.5bn (about R36bn) and $100m (R1.4bn) for each of the next 13 years, People magazine reports.
2. Rupert and Anna Maria Torv: $1.7bn (R24.5bn)
Media mogul Rupert Murdoch and journalist Maria Torv were married for 31 years before their “amicable separation” in 1998, Insider reports. They have three children together.
Although details aren’t clear Maria is rumoured to have received $1.7bn (R24.5bn).
3. Mel Gibson and Robyn Moore: $425m (R6.1bn)
After a dream wedding in 1980, Mel Gibson and Robyn Moore spent 26 years as husband and wife. The $425m (R6.1bn) settlement also included half of Mel’s future proceeds. It’s considered one of Hollywood’s most expensive divorce settlements to date.
4. Bob Johnson and Sheila Crump Johnson: $400m (R5.8bn)
The two TV moguls were married from 1969 to 2002 during which they co-founded the BET network. In 2000 they became the first African-American billionaires.
When the couple divorced in 2002 Sheila walked away with $400m (R5.8bn).
5. Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger: $250m (R3.6bn)
The former Mr Universe and governor of California seemed to have it all. He and Maria ended their marriage in 2011 after 25 years together. The details haven’t been finalised but it’s estimated Maria will receive at least $250m (R3.6bn), Worthy reports.
6. Michael Jordan and Juanita Vanoy: $168m (R2.4bn)
The basketball icon married Juanita in 1989 during his second season with the Chicago Bulls. She filed for divorce in 2002 but the couple decided to try to work things out instead. They broke up for good in 2016 after 17 years together. According to their lawyers the two ended their marriage “mutually and amicably”, Insider reports. Juanita reportedly walked away with $168m (R2.4bn).
7. Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren: $110m (R1.6bn)
After the golf star crashed his car into a tree outside his Florida home in 2009 he admitted to having multiple affairs. He and Elin announced their divorce in 2010 after six years of marriage. Elin received a reported $110m (R1.6bn) settlement, New York Daily reports.
