The Clooneys and Oprah donate $500k each to march against guns

New York — Actor George Clooney and his wife, Amal Clooney, are donating $500k to students organising nationwide marches against gun violence, and they say they'll also attend next month's planned protests.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the couple said they're inspired by the "courage and eloquence" of the survivors-turned-activists from Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Seventeen people were killed at the school and others wounded when a former student went on a rampage with an assault rifle. Students are mobilising a 24 March march in Washington and elsewhere to urge lawmakers to enact tougher gun control.

The Clooneys added that they're donating the money in the names of their eight-month-old twins Ella and Alexander. The couple also said the family plans to "stand side by side" with students next month.

Shortly after the statement was made, Oprah announced that she will match George and Amal Clooney's $500k donation.

The media mogul tweeted from her verified account on Tuesday night that the student organisers remind her of civil rights activists in the 1960s "who also said we've had ENOUGH and our voices will be heard."
