Cape Town - Despite their split in 2010, Vanessa Hudgens says she’s appreciative of Zac Efron and the relationship they shared.

During an interview with journalist Scott Feinberg on his podcast, Awards Chatter, the 30-year-old actress revealed she’s thankful to have dated the Baywatch actor back then, E! Online reports.

"It started off really organically," Vanessa said of her relationship with the actor. "I couldn’t have been more grateful for that relationship at the time."

The Second Act actress explained that the relationship helped stabilise her during High School Musical’s rise in popularity.

"It was this massive phenomenon and all of a sudden all eyes were on me. It’s just a really weird, foreign thing to go through. And by being in a relationship, it kind of kept me grounded because I had someone to lean on who was going through it as well."

Although the pair were happily in love, their relationship wasn’t all easy-going, Bustle reports.

"I remember one time we had a fight while at rehearsals, and I remember Kenny Ortega [director of High School Musical] coming around the corner with the most concerned look on his face like, 'Oh no, is our movie going to fall apart?'

"I pride myself on being a professional, so I thought, 'Put that aside. We’re going to move forward and do what we need to do.' And we sorted it all out," she said.

Both Vanessa and Zac have moved on since breaking up and the Princess Switch actress is now dating Carrie Diaries actor Austin Butler.

During an interview with Women’s Health, the actress said her relationship is solid.

"We both respect, trust, and admire each other. I feel strong as an independent woman and I’m very self-reliant, but it’s nice to have a best friend you can share victories with as well as losses. He inspires me more than anyone."
