Venus Williams breaks down after being asked about fatal car crash

Cape Town – Venus Williams got emotional when asked about her involvement in a fatal car crash that caused a man’s death.

The tennis pro who won her first match at the start of Wimbledon on Monday could not avoid questions about the accident during a press conference.

When asked about the accident Venus struggled to answer but said that she is completely speechless as she wiped away tears.

An official then intervened and said: “Before we take any more questions from Venus, please be aware she's unable to say anything more about this so I'd ask you to respect her wishes please.”


Police revealed the 37-year-old was at fault in a fatal car crash on 9 June that lead to 78-year-old Jerome Barson’s death. In addition police reported that was no evidence that Venus was under the influence or distracted. (Read more here)

According to reports his family has filed a lawsuit against Venus but she has not been cited or charged. (Read more here)

The five-time Wimbledon singles champion made a statement on Facebook on Sunday sending her condolences to the family.
