WATCH: Cher recalls the time she and Meryl Streep saved a woman from being mugged

Cape Town - Cher has recalled the time she and Mama Mia! Here We Go Again co-star Meryl Streep saved a singing waitress from being mugged.

During an appearance on The Ellen Show, Cher shared details about her long friendship with Meryl and recalled the fearful story.

"You know we saved a girl's life once, the two of us," Cher told Ellen.

She added: "So, she [Meryl] had just had Mamie and we were at her apartment and she said, 'I want ice-cream,' I said, 'Okay cool, but it's kind of a dangerous neighbourhood and it's night.' And she said, 'Ah no, it's between China Town and Little Italy, what could happen.'"

Murphy's Law, something happened as Cher explained that they heard screaming and ended up scaring a "huge man" who was trying to steal a woman's purse, away.
