WATCH: Divergent star Shailene Woodley arrested

Bismark — Shailene Woodley was arrested during a protest of the four-state Dakota Access pipeline in southern North Dakota.

Morton County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Rob Keller says the Divergent star was arrested on Monday for criminal trespassing and engaging in a riot during a protest at a construction site that involved about 300 people.

Both charges are misdemeanors that carry a maximum punishment of 30 days in jail and a $1 500 fine.

Keller says 27 people were arrested during protests at two construction sites that prompted the shutdown of a state highway for several hours. No injuries were reported.

The actress was peacefully protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline when she was approached by police and arrested for trespassing.

Woodley filmed the whole ordeal on Facebook live to make sure followers could see what was happening. At one point she clarifies what exactly is happening by explaining to viewers, "I don't know if you guys just heard me, but I was walking back to my RV, which is right there so that we can go back to camp peacefully and they grabbed me by my jacket and said that I was not allowed to continue."

When she tries to ask the officer a question, he responds with, "We can't talk right here, but you're going to be placed under arrest for criminal trespassing."

She then tries to find out why she is the only one being arrested to which the officer clarifies that she was identified and therefore has to be arrested.

After Woodley is arrested she walks away with the officers saying, "So everybody knows…we were going to our vehicle which they had all surrounded and waiting for me with giant guns and a giant truck behind them just so they could arrest me. I hope you're watching mainstream media."

The 24-year-old has since been released from the Morton County Sheriff's Department. She posted a $500 fine and is scheduled for court on 24 October.

Woodley's publicist told E! News, "She appreciates the outpouring of support, not only for her, but more importantly, for the continued fight against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline."

Following her arrest, celebs including co-star Ansel Elgort and Mark Ruffalo toomk to social media to stand by Woodley.

The $3.8 billion pipeline is being built by Dallas-based Energy Transfer Partners and will cross through North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Illinois.
