Cape Town - Actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson recently took to Instagram to open up about the death of his father, Rocky, who was born Wayde Douglas Bowles.

The star revealed that his professional wrestler dad had died from a "massive heart attack" aged 75, according to the Daily Mail.

The Jumanji: The Next Level star shared a snap of a stylishly bordered leather book and a wood grain pen, captioning the photo, “This was fun. Written a lot of things over the years, but nothing prepared me for this one.”

In a lengthy video posted to Instagram, the 47-year-old actor shared more information about his father’s death and the medical complications that led to it, Fox News reports.

“A lot of guys wanted to know what happened to my dad,” he wrote.

“He hadn’t been feeling well, had been battling a cold and infection and on Tuesday he had what’s called deep-vein thrombosis, which is essentially a clot in the leg.

“It was a big ol’ blood clot that broke free, traveled up his body and went right to his lung, clotted his lung and he died quickly from a massive heart attack, just like that.

“That did give me great comfort in knowing it wasn’t prolonged. He’d been in a lot of pain for a long time,” he explained.

Dwayne also thanked his fans for their support during his dad’s passing.

To end off his video, the Ballers actor reflected on Rocky’s career as a wrestler and said his dad often told him “a day without pain is like a day without sunshine”.

Celebrities such as actors Mark Wahlberg and Ryan Reynolds and retired ski racer Lindsey Vonn commented on the post to send support to the actor.

“Love brother,” Mark wrote in a show of solidarity.

“Always have your back,” Lindsey added.

“Beautifully said. Sending you and the family tons of love,” Ryan posted.
