Cape Town - Stephen Hawking’s children call their late dad an ‘extraordinary man’.

The 76-year-old scientist, whose astonishing work shaped modern cosmology and inspired audiences all around the world, sadly passed away at his home on Tuesday, reports The Guardian.

In a statement released by the physicist's children, they labeled the scientific legend a worldwide inspiration.

“We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today,” the statement said. “He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years. His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world.

“He once said: ‘It would not be much of a universe if it wasn’t home to the people you love.’ We will miss him forever.”

Stephen shares three children with his ex-wife, Jane Wilde, who he met at a party and later married back in 1965.

According to The Sun, the pair’s oldest son, Robert, was born in 1967 and selflessly helped his mom take care of Stephen as his conditioned deteriorated.

Robert initially wanted to be a scientist just like his dad, but he later delved into software engineering and now works for Microsoft. He currently lives in Seattle, US, will his wife and two kids.

The famous scientist’s only daughter, Lucy, who was born in 1970, is an author and journalist who has already written two adult novels and three science-based books for kids, reports News Week.

The work the 47-year-old has done in explaining science to younger people has made her a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society.

According to Daily Mail, Timothy, who is Stephen’s youngest son, is currently a language graduate from Exeter University and now works in marketing for the toy company Lego.

In a BBC documentary, the 39-year-old, who often played pranks on his dad, revealed that he used to program swear words into his father’s speech machine.
