Cape Town - Willow Smith has opened up about how she self-harmed but that she stopped cutting herself after reading about science and spirituality.

The 18-year-old, who’s the daughter of Will Smith (50) and Jada Pinkett Smith (47), said she started cutting herself at the age of 12 following her sudden fame after the success of her hit single Whip My Hair, Metro UK reports.

“I was super young and I had a dream. All I really wanted to do was sing but I didn’t equate that with all the business and the stress that ended up coming with it,” she told PEOPLE in a recent interview.

“It was the perfect way to rebel.”

Jada had no idea about the cutting. It wasn’t until Willow recently spoke up about it on their Facebook Watch TV series Red Table Talk, FOX News reports.

“What? When were you cutting yourself? I didn’t see that. Cutting yourself where?,” a shocked Jada asked.

The singer responded by pointing towards her wrists.

“On my wrist. I mean, you can’t even see it but there’s still a little something there. I totally lost my sanity for a moment there,” she said.

“I never talk about it because it was such a short but weird point in my life. But you have to pull yourself out of it.”

Willow says she started doing research on science and spirituality which helped her quit the harmful act.

“I realised that this is pointless – my body is a temple, and I completely stopped. It seemed literally psychotic after a certain point because I’d learned to see myself as worthy,” she says.

Even though Jada was surprised to learn about her daughter’s self-harming, she admits that she was “so proud of her in that moment.”
