Cape Town - Despite murmurings about Doria Ragland spending Christmas at Sandringham House in Norfolk with the royals, People magazine has confirmed Meghan’s mother will be enjoying her festivities in the United States.

The queen reportedly extended an invitation to the 62-year-old, realising how much it would mean to Meghan to have her mother with her during the holiday season – a rare gesture considering Doria isn’t part of the royal family.

The American social worker was recently spotted in Los Angeles with a friend and seemed to be in good spirits, Daily Mail reports.

This year will be the second Christmas Meghan spends with the royal family and her first as a working member of the monarchy.

The former actress’ brother, Thomas Markle Jnr, said that in the past the family would traditionally eat Christmas dinner at the home of Meghan’s late grandmother Jeanette Ragland.

“Doria would cook the Christmas dinner. Doria and her family were probably the biggest anchors of family unity when it came to holidays,” he said.

“Their entire family would get together over at Doria's mom's house and our family hadn't done that for many years when I was growing up. We just did that a few times as young children in Chicago.”
