Cape Town - The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were a breath of fresh air in the British royal family.

As Harry and Meghan reveal they’ll be stepping back as senior royals, we take a trip down memory lane at some of their finest moments.

1. The engagement

After months of speculation, the couple confirmed their engagement in 2017. The prince and his then fiancée posed on the grounds of Kensington Palace for a photoshoot to ring in the happy news, Grazia reports.

The smiling couple were pictured against the backdrop of the Sunken Gardens, a favourite spot of Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana.

Meghan wore a gorgeous white coat for the occasion and looking dazzling next to her prince. She showed off her engagement ring, which Harry had designed.

2. The wedding

As Meghan had been a successful actress, the star-studded day was attended by celebrities from both sides of the Atlantic.

The lavish May 2018 event was packed to the brim with VIP guests and the stars included George and Amal Clooney, the Beckhams, Idris Elba, Oprah Winfrey and James Corden, according to Daily Mail.

Guests at the wedding were given a special luncheon performance by Sir Elton John, who’d been friends with Harry’s late mom and famously sang at her funeral in 1997.

Meghan became the first mixed-race member of the royal family in an extraordinary journey from actress to a Duchess.

3. Meghan’s pregnancy and the birth of Archie

In October 2018, Kensington Palace issued a statement announcing the royal couple were expecting a baby.

The statement read: “Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that the Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019.”

Baby Archie was born in the wee hours of the morning of 6 May. New dad Harry gushed to gathered journalists that both baby and Meghan were healthy and that he was “over the moon” with excitement, according to Time.

“It’s been the most amazing experience I could ever possibly imagine. How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension, but we’re both absolutely thrilled and so grateful for the love and support,” Harry said.

4. The royal tour of Southern Africa

Last year, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex kick-started their tour of Southern Africa in South Africa and then went on to visit Botswana, Angola and Malawi.

During the 10-day trip, the Sussexes met with state leaders, collaborated with several charities and discussed conservation efforts, according to Good Housekeeping.

While in Angola, Prince Harry retraced his mother’s footsteps through a minefield where his mother famously walked to raise awareness of the issue 20 years earlier.

Meghan also did her part and gave one of her most passionate speeches addressing a group of young women that are part of a female empowerment organisation in South Africa. One of the most touching lines from her speech was when she addressed gender-based violence at a time when South African women were protesting the issue countrywide.

“May I just say that while I’m here with my husband as a member of the royal family, I want you to know from me I’m here with you as a mother, as a wife, as a woman, as a woman of colour, and as your sister,” Meghan said.

5. Meghan launches a clothing line and is a guest editor for British Vogue

The Duchess launched a fashion collection in support of a project to help women in the workplace. According to the Telegraph, Meghan said it is “100% our responsibility to support and uplift each other”.

The royal also delivered a touching speech to fashion editors about the importance of a new kind of charity, urging the public to donate items that helped them get to where they are today.

Prior to the release of the collection, Meghan guest-edited the September 2019 issue of British Vogue which highlighted trailblazing women. These included artists, prime ministers and climate change campaigners, all breaking boundaries and setting the agenda across the globe.

It marked the first time a September issue of the magazine has ever been co-edited, according to Vogue.

Meghan began working on the issue at the start of 2019 and personally selected which women were to be featured.

“The last seven months have been a rewarding process, curating and collaborating with Edward Enninful, British Vogue’s editor-in-chief, to take the year’s most-read fashion issue and steer its focus to the values, causes and people making impact in the world today,” the Duchess said.
