Cape Town – Hilary Clinton has opened up about the "racist" treatment of Meghan Markle in an interview with BBC Radio 5 this week.

The former first lady and presidential candidate whom the Duchess of Sussex has long admired spoke on The Emma Barnett Show along with her daughter, Chelsea.

She told the broadcaster and journalist stepping onto the "biggest stage with the brightest spotlight" and having your "every move scrutinised" takes some getting used to.

"I really wish her and her husband the very best because they are struggling to have a life of meaning and integrity on their own terms. And that's hard enough if you're just walking around in today's world, but if you're on that big a platform, it's really difficult."

When both Hilary and Chelsea were asked if the media scrutiny has to do with her gender and race, they said yes. "I don't think there's any doubt of it. I think even if you go back and look at social media from the time the engagement was announced, race was clearly an element in it."

She condemned the media feeding into that narrative, calling it "heartbreaking and wrong".

"I just want to put my arms around. I want to hug her. I want to tell her, 'Hang in there, don't let those bad guys get you down, keep going, do what you think is right.'."

Chelsea also commented that she admires the "gutsy" woman that the duchess is, and referring to Meghan and Harry's decision to sue several publications over their deliberate negative coverage of the couple, she said, she has to do what she feels is right, and this is it for her.
