How Harry, Meghan, William and Kate are speaking up amid protests in the US

• The royal family is standing up against injustice and racism.
• The Queen's Commonwealth Trust as well as Prince William and Kate Middleton's mental health initiative, Heads Together, have released statements amid protests in the US.
• "Silence is not an option," the Queen's Commonwealth Trust, of which Harry and Meghan are president and vice-president, said.

The royals are showing their support as citizens in the US continue to fight against injustice following the murder of George Floyd.

The 46-year-old black man was killed at the hands of a police officer on 25 May. Derek Chauvin has since lost his job and has been charged with murder as protesters flood the streets across the country.

On Monday, the Queen's Commonwealth Trust shared a poignant quote by Martin Luther King in solidarity with the protesters. They shared on Twitter: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."

The Trust, which Queen Elizabeth is patron of while Harry and Meghan serve as president and vice-president respectively, wrote: "Young people are vital voices in the fight against injustice and racism around the world. As a global community of young leaders we stand together in pursuit of fairness and a better way forward. Silence is not an option."

Though Prince William and Kate have been focusing on frontline workers and their mental health amid the global pandemic, they also shared, via their initiative Heads Together on Instagram: "Heads Together stands with the black community. Today and every day.

"This is a reminder to all that your mental health matters, and our charity partners are there for you if you need support. If you or someone you know is feeling distressed, overwhelmed, anxious or panicked, talking can help."

The statements come after a video of Meghan Markle talking about her own experiences of racism recently resurfaced.

In the 2012 clip for USA Network's Characters Unite: 'I Won't Stand' campaign she says: "For me, I think it hits a really personal note. I'm biracial, most people can't tell what I'm mixed with, so much of my life has felt like being a fly on the wall. And so some of the slurs that I've heard, really offensive jokes, or the names, it's just hit me in a really strong way. A couple of years ago, I heard someone call my mom the n-word."

She added: "I am really proud of my heritage on both sides. I'm really proud of where I've come from and where I'm going. But yeah, I hope that by the time I have children, that people are even more open-minded to how things are changing."
