Cape Town – We've all got our favourite actors, singers – royals too – but the stats are in, and the people have spoken. Internet-based market research and data analytics company, YouGov just revealed the most popular royal in the UK.

No surprise here – Queen Elizabeth tops the list as the most popular royal, but interestingly comes in second to Prince William as the most famous.

Prince Harry comes in as the second most popular British royal, followed by Prince William, Kate Middleton and then the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip.

Meghan took the sixth spot ahead of Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.

Queen Elizabeth II took the throne in 1952 and celebrated her diamond jubilee in 2012. That means she's been Britain's queen for 67 years, making her the longest reigning monarch in British history.

Most people respect Queen Elizabeth as she's been the head of state – Queen of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth realms – and for most, the leader they know and love. It only makes sense that she tops the list for the most popular royal.

In fact, in the year of her diamond jubilee in a Guardian/ICM poll, 69% of respondents felt Britain would be worse off without the queen. The findings revealed "record support" for the monarchy.

But who better to weigh in on their love for the Queen than the very people chanting "long may she reign". On her 90th birthday, people gathered in Windsor to celebrate Her Majesty.

Speaking to VICE, one royal fan said the queen "is a representation of being English". "It's always going to be a part of who we are... the royal family helps us to define ourselves."

"I think she's an inspiration to everyone," said one admirer. "She's an icon. She's a role model for the women of today. [She's] a woman to look up to that's been around for so many years and never made a wrong footstep anywhere. She's just... she's... I have no words."

Another commented, "The Queen means an awful lot to me.

"She's a mother, a wife, hand-in-hand with the Duke of Edinburgh. She's a grandmother, she's a great-grandmother, and also, she's done her work supremely well. I say 'God save the Queen'."
