Cape Town - Kate Middleton pretended to be Prince William’s girlfriend just a month after they met to help him fight off the unwanted attention he was receiving at a party in their first term of university.

According to Laura Warshauer, a close friend of the couple, the Duchess of Cambridge was forced to step in when a girl kept making advances at William, Marie Claire reports.

"Will was getting really hit on by this girl at the party and it was getting quite uncomfortable because he couldn't shake her off,” she explained.

"He was being really polite, but this girl just didn't get the hint. All of a sudden Kate came up behind him and put her arms around him.”

The Duke of Cambridge reportedly thanked Kate afterwards and the pair became instant companions, Sun UK reports.

"Kate was the only girl in the room who could have done that. And that was just a month after we started university,” Laura revealed.

The royal couple were friends at first but things soon turned romantic.

After meeting at St Andrews University in 2001, William and Kate dated for several years after their studies and married in 2011.
