Cape Town - Local jeans designer Tshepo Mohlala recently had the honour of meeting Duchess Meghan.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex had a successful Royal Tour of Africa, but before heading back to the UK Duchess Meghan made a solo trip to Johannesburg.

On Monday she visited Victoria Yards, a hub for local artists and designers, to collect a package.

"A month or so ago I received a call from the British embassy stating that Meghan wanted to order a pair of my jeans and I couldn’t believe it," an ecstatic Tshepo explained.

"Even though she was in South Africa we didn’t think she’d pick them up personally but on Sunday I received another call that she’d be in our space to personally pick up the jeans," he added.

The 38-year-old mom was surprised with a special gift for baby Archie when she picked up the jeans she had ordered.

"My team and I decided to honour her son with a cute dungaree and it was her heart-warming reaction when I handed them to her that’ll forever be etched in my memory."

Tshepo, who started his jeans brand in 2015, said, "It was so beautiful seeing her maternal side come to life," and added that she was beaming with gratitude.

"She’s the realest person I’ve met. She walks into a space and is such a warm person that everyone wants to interact with [her]."

The 28-year-old designer initially studied fashion design at the University of Johannesburg but had to drop out due to financial constraints. He revealed how starting his own brand was a blessing in disguise.

"I went from couch surfing to having the Duchess of Sussex wearing my brand and that for me is just incredible on its own," he said.

Tshepo is inspired by the three women in his life – his mother, grandmother, and aunt – and wants his jeans to be a vehicle to restore hope.

"I started this brand because I wanted to tell a story and there’s so much a pair of jeans can tell you about someone, which is exactly what we strive for at Tshepo’s Jeans."
