The Duchess of Sussex was apparently left "emotional" during the final days of her farewell tour in the UK.
According to reports the 38-year-old mom of one got teary-eyed during a farewell party she threw for royal staff ahead of her flight home to Canada on Tuesday.
She was also described as "quietly devastated" during her last private function – meeting students who’ve received scholarships from the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) in Buckingham Palace. Later, she headed out with Prince Harry to Westminster Abbey for the Commonwealth Day service, along with the rest of the royal firm.
According to a royal expert the couple have been left "crushed" by Megxit, which comes into full effect from 31 March and which will see the pair embarking on their new life independent of royal duties.
They feel their exit from royal life "was unnecessarily cruel" and that they were forced into it, says Harper’s Bazaar royal editor-at- large, Omid Scobie, part of the media contingent on the couple’s farewell tour.
"To say they were crushed is an understatement. It’s a decision they still feel wasn’t necessary but also wasn’t a surprise, given the lack of support they received as they were relentlessly attacked by sections of the British press with almost daily mistruths," Scobie says.
"While recent tabloid coverage has made it seem like the Sussexes' half-in-half-out bid was about wanting it all, the reality was a couple who were left with no other choice but to create their own change after being left to fend for themselves against impossible circumstances – even during her pregnancy.
"They knew something had to change, but they also didn’t want to stop supporting the queen. One can’t help but wonder if things might have been different if a family member or two had stood up for them during the darkest times."
He says Harry was "heartbroken" about having to give up his military honours after serving 10 years in the British army, while Meghan shed tears at the farewell party they hosted for their staff.
Meghan reportedly flew back to Canada after the Commonwealth service, with Omid revealing she wanted to be "home before Archie woke up".
