Cape Town – Keeping a big announcement a secret is a lot harder than it seems, and The Royal National Theatre just learned that.

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, is to be announced as the royal patron of the publicly funded performing arts venue on Thursday, 10 January. But to the royal family’s surprise, the announcement was accidentally revealed a day earlier.

According to E! News the theatre’s official website shared the press release, dated for Thursday, on Wednesday.

The announcement has since been removed, but not before screengrabs were taken and shared online.

When the announcement is officially made, Meghan will take over from Queen Elizabeth – who is the current royal patron of The Royal National Theatre.

According to royal commentator, Omid Scobie, Meghan met with artistic director of the theatre, Rufus Norris, in December. The private meeting sparked rumours that they were in talks about gearing the duchess up to take over.
