Cape Town – Queen Elizabeth and the royal family turned out in their finest for the first day of Royal Ascot.

Every year the famous racecourse holds a special week of races in June which is attended by the queen, who has had an interest in horses since childhood.

Each day kicks off with the royal procession when Queen Elizabeth and other members of the royal family arrive along the track in horse-drawn coaches. They spend the rest of the day watching the races from the royal enclosure.

On day one the queen was joined by the Duke of York and the King and Queen of the Netherlands.

Other family members who attended include the Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Princess Royal, the Earl and the Countess of Wessex, Princess Eugenie, Princess Beatrice and Zara Tindall.
