Cape Town – Kate Middleton attended the Diplomatic Reception at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday where she completed her look with none other than the Lover's Knot tiara – which was once worn by Princess Diana.

According to the Kensington Palace Instagram account, the annual reception hosted by the queen is attended by members of the Diplomatic Corps, who represents the UK at home and abroad.

At the event, Kate wore a navy Alexander McQueen dress, paired with a blue sash symbolising her role as a member of the Royal Victorian Order, reports Elle. She completed her look with chandelier style earrings, a matching necklace and the pearl-embellished tiara.

According to E! News, the Lover's Knot tiara was created for Queen Mary – Queen Elizabeth's grandmother – in 1914, and was made from pearls and diamonds. After she died, the queen inherited the crown before giving it to Princess Diana as a wedding gift.

According to Reader's Digest, it was the one piece of jewellery Diana wasn't allowed to keep though, because it was part of the royal family's private collection. She gave it back to the queen after her divorce from Prince Charles.

Now, it appears the crown is on loan to the Duchess of Cambridge – and it looks as though it's become one of her favourite pieces.
