Cape Town - It seems like just the other day that we – and the rest of the world – watched enthralled as Prince William tied the knot with Kate Middleton.

And eight years and three kids later we’re still as infatuated as ever with the gorgeous royal couple who celebrate their wedding anniversary on Monday, 29 April.

Fans were left shocked recently when rumours surfaced that William was having an affair. Turns out it was just unsubstantiated tabloid fodder and our favourite couple are in no danger of splitting at all!

To celebrate the duke and duchess’ special occasion Kensington Palace shared pictures from their 2011 wedding on their official Instagram account.

The two exchanged vows at Westminster Abbey before moving to Buckingham Palace where they sealed their marriage with a public kiss on the balcony in front of thousands of well-wishers.

Kate, 37, was a vision in a dress designed by Sarah Burton, creative director of luxury fashion house Alexander McQueen, while William, 36, wore his military uniform on his big day, Daily Mail reports.

It was one of the biggest occasions in England’s history, followed live by tens of millions more around the world, including 72 million live streams on YouTube.

Over 5 000 street parties were held across the UK, and one million people lined the route between Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace.

The cost of the event was reportedly £23.7m (then about R260.7m), which was carried jointly by the royal family and the Middletons.

Today of course, the couple, who met in 2001 while studying at the University of St Andrews, are proud parents of three children – Prince George, 5, Princess Charlotte, 3, and 1-year-old Prince Louis.

Reflecting on the time they first met as students in an interview with ITV News shortly after announcing their engagement in October 2010, William said: "We were friends for over a year first and it just sort of blossomed from then on. We just spent more time with each other, had a good giggle, had lots of fun and realised we shared the same interests and just had a really good time.

"Well I actually think I went bright red when I met you and sort of scuttled off, feeling very shy about meeting you," Kate said. "It did take a bit of time for us to get to know each other, but we did become very close friends from quite early on."

And long may that friendship last!
