Cape Town - Princess Diana’s former lover has died aged 73 in his home in France.
Oliver Hoare, whom Princess Diana was “obsessed” with, died on Monday, 10 September after a long battle with cancer, reports The Sun.
The debonair art dealer started an affair with Diana after her dad, Earl Spencer died in March 1992, reports Daily Mail.
Oliver was married to Diane de Waldner, a French oil heiress with whom he has three children, and the two stayed together even after his reported affair with Lady Di.
The Etonian was a good friend of Prince Charles' (69) and often visited Windsor Castle with his wife, which added to the scandal behind their saucy affair, reports Mirror.
Although Oliver never admitted to affair rumours, a former palace bodyguard claimed he once saw a "semi-naked man behind a potted bay tree in a Kensington Palace corridor, smoking a cigar."
Oliver ended the affair in 1993 after his wife threatened to divorce him. This then allegedly led to Diana bombarding him with calls.
In a later interview Princess Diana admitted she’d called him a few times over a period of six to nine months, but never in an obsessive manner, reports Express.
Oliver studied art history at Sorbonne University in Paris and later became a specialist in Islamic art – it’s rumoured he sold Sheik Saud Al Thani, a Qatari art collector, artworks worth more than R393m.
