Cape Town - Prince Charles and Princess Diana finalised their divorce in 1996 following their reportedly strained marriage of 15 years.

Royal expert Ingrid Seward recently revealed what she says were the first words the late Princess Di exchanged with Prince Charles following their divorce, the Express UK reports.

Speaking candidly to Ingrid, at the time Princess Diana recalled the setting where she met her ex-husband after their divorce, writes Seward in her book, The Queen and Di: The Untold Story.

"'We asked each other, Why did this have to happen?’" Diana said of the moment which took place at Kensington Palace.

This revelation comes after recent reports that Queen Elizabeth dreaded meeting Princess Diana, and when she did, "it left her feeling drained".

During her famous interview with the BBC, Princess Di, who hadn’t consulted Kensington Palace, revealed she and Charles stayed together partly for the public.

"My husband and I had to keep everything together because we didn't want to disappoint the public, and yet obviously there was a lot of anxiety going on within our four walls,” Diana said.
