Cape Town - It seems Queen Elizabeth has a sweet tooth.
Her Majesty’s former chef Darren McGrady recently revealed the one thing the queen simply couldn’t get enough of, Daily Express reports.
"She’s absolutely a chocoholic," Darren says. "Anything we put on the menu that had chocolate on she’d choose, especially chocolate perfection pie." The latter consists of a pastry case lined with cinnamon, meringue and chocolate cream.
The chef went on to reveal that the 93-year-old loves steak as well, according to HELLO! Magazine.
"For a main course she loved game, things like Gaelic steak – fillet steak with a mushroom whisky sauce – especially if we did it with venison.
"For a first course she loved the Gleneagles pâté, which is smoked salmon, trout and mackerel.
"She loved using ingredients off the estate and so if we had salmon from [the queen’s residence in Scotland] Balmoral [Castle], from the River Dee, she’d have that. It was one of her favourites," said the chef, who worked at Buckingham Palace for 11 years.
Although the queen loves various foods, Darren revealed she isn’t a foodie.
"She always ate to live rather than live to eat. [Her husband] Prince Philip was the foodie.
"He’d want to try any new dishes all the time and got excited about new ingredients whereas the queen, if we had a new recipe, she’d have to look at the whole recipe before saying, 'Yes, okay let’s try it.'
"But for the most part she stuck to the same dishes week in week out," he said.
But the queen isn’t the only Windsor who has a favourite snack.
Darren also revealed that her grandson Prince Harry loves to snack on Nanaimo bars – a coconut-based bar with custard filling and a chocolate topping.
"Prince Harry is no stranger to Nanaimo bars," he recently tweeted.
"I used to make them (the Buckingham Palace recipe we got when the queen visited Canada in 1983) for him and [his brother Prince] William at Kensington Palace when they had friends over."
