1. Elf
This Christmas classic is a must-see! No matter how many times you’ve seen it, the laughs are the gift that keeps on giving. Will Ferrell plays Buddy, a human raised by elves who travels to New York in search of his true identity.
2. How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Bringing the famous cartoon to life took more than eight hours in makeup every day for Jim Carrey and lots of improvised humour. This is a special one for Dr Seuss fans and features a pretty gross cheese-eating scene that only works because of Carrey’s hilarity.
3. Home Alone
A kids classic that has crossed-over to a Christmas classic and it remains one for multiple reasons: Macaulay Culkin is charming and his booby traps speak to the inner child in all of us.
4. The Polar Express
A magical coming-of-age story that unfolds on a train ride to the North Pole. The film is based on the children’s book by Chris van Allsburg.
5. Love Actually
No Christmas movie night is complete without Love Actually. This star-studded ensemble romantic comedy follows eight couples who try to navigate the complexity of their relationships over Christmas.
6. The Night Before
This one is the best in the messy way you’d expect any Seth Rogen movie to be. It’s a stoner-Christmas movie that’s worth a watch, according to Esquire. It’s the perfect story about those guys we all know who just refuse to grow up and end up having their butts handed to them, reminding them they’re not kids anymore.
7. Die Hard
Sure it’s an action movie, but it’s also a Christmas movie. The story starts off on 24 December, there’s snow... and Bruce Willis has a machine gun...
8. The Nightmare Before Christmas
The master of melancholy Tim Burton, turns this Christmas movie into a spook-fest. If you can get over the fact that the film mostly takes place in Halloween Town then you’ll find a brilliantly written animated holiday musical with a spooky twist.
9. Gremlins
From adorable to abominable, after a young man is gifted a cute, furry creature he fails to follow one of the three rules of raising it: he feeds the pet after midnight. All hell breaks loose as the creature spawns evil, destructive Gremlins.
10. The Santa Clause
Dark is one way to describe this one, especially if you consider that the main character accidentally kills Santa and has to take his place next Christmas.
