Cape Town - 'Star Wars' Day is upon us, and to celebrate, here are 10 facts you may not have known about the franchise.
What is Star Wars Day and why does it exist?
"May the 4th be with you" is the phrase marking this unofficial holiday because it sounds like a well-known line from the films: "May the force be with you."
According to CNN the phrase was first used (outside of the world of Star Wars fans) on May 4, 1979, when Margaret Thatcher took office as UK Prime Minister.
The Conservative Party reportedly placed an ad in the London Evening Newspaper that read, "May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations."
This year's celebration will be a little bittersweet for fans as, Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew died earlier this week, at the age of 74.
