Cape Town – The V&A Waterfront Ocean Life Film Festival kicks off on Wednesday evening bringing you four world-class ocean films to feast on.
The team at the Wavescape Surf & Ocean Festival have curated these films, showing at Cinema Nouveau on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night at 20:00.
Five-time Volvo Ocean Race veteran, Damian Foxall, sailed into Cape Town to join South African ocean conservation experts for the film festival.
The master sailor is passionate about ocean conservation and is an ambassador for Sailors for Sea – a non-profit group comprising the boating and yachting industry that is committed to saving our oceans.
Foxall will join local activists and ocean warriors for discussions before each of the blockbuster documentaries that have been making waves overseas: A Plastic Ocean, Chasing Coral, BLUE and Smog of the Sea.
He joins the Beach Co-op- & PETCO, the South African PET Plastic Recycling Company as well Diony Elbers Lalieu from Surfers Pledge and Romy Chevallier, Senior Researcher at Governance of Africa's Resources Programme at the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA).

WEDNESDAY, 29 NOVEMBER - A Plastic Ocean (1hr 42)
A Plastic Ocean is an adventure documentary shot in more than 20 locations over the past four years. Explorers Craig Leeson and Tanya Streeter and a team of international scientists reveal what lies behind the scourge of plastic pollution but share real solutions with viewers.
THURSDAY, 30 NOVEMBER - Chasing Coral (1hr 33)
Around the world, coral reefs are feeling the heat — literally. Persistently rising ocean temperatures have triggered coral bleaching events on a scale never seen before. This new documentary tells a grim story of reefs in trouble, and warns about what we could lose when they die.
FRIDAY, 1 DECEMBER 2017 - BLUE (1hr 16) (with Smog of the Sea)
Blue is a powerful film that charts the challenges we face and the opportunities for positive change in how we look after our oceans. Filmed in Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, the South Pacific and the United States, this stunning cinematic documentary comes at a time when we are making critical decisions that will decide the legacy we leave for generations to come.
FRIDAY 1 DECEMBER 2017 - The Smog of the Sea (30min) (with Blue) The Smog of the Sea chronicles a one-week journey through the remote waters of the Sargasso Sea. Marine scientist Marcus Eriksen invited onboard an unusual crew to help him study the sea: renowned surfers Keith and Dan Malloy, musician Jack Johnson, spearfisher woman Kimi Werner, and bodysurfer Mark Cunningham become citizen scientists on a mission to assess the fate of plastics in the world’s oceans.
