Cape Town – Take a trip down memory lane and the Hundred Acre Wood with Winnie the Pooh this weekend.
In their first live-action movie Winnie, Eeyore, Piglet and Tigger have to help a grown-up Christopher Robin (Ewan McGregor) rediscover the joy of life.
Also showing: A biopic about Mary Shelley, an action thriller sent in a futuristic Los Angeles, a young adult science fiction thriller and the sequel to Sicario in which an FBI agent investigates Mexican drug cartels.
Here are the 5 new films releasing in SA:
Movie: Christopher Robin
Our rating: 3/5
Short review: A far cry from something like Paddington, Christopher Robin is still gentle and good-natured enough to remind one why Winnie the Pooh has somehow never really gone out of fashion.
Movie: Mary Shelley
Our rating: 2/5
Short review: While the life of Mary Shelley is an interesting one, the spark that inspired her to write the famous Frankenstein is severely lacking on-screen.
Movie: Hotel Artemis
Our rating: 3/5
Short review: Hotel Artemis never quite lives up to its intriguing premise but its breezily entertaining mix of colourful characters, bone-crunching action and distinctive atmosphere sets it apart from similar sci-fi action-thrillers.
Movie: The Darkest Minds
Our rating: 3/5
Short review: The Darkest Minds is fun to watch. It’s also the kind of movie that has set itself up perfectly for the sequel.
Movie: Sicario: Day of the Soldado
Our rating: 3/5
Short review: In Day of the Soldado, an equally bleak Sicario that hurts for the absence of Emily Blunt.
