Cape Town – When it comes to making movies, everybody wants to try their hand at acting.

Many a celebrity has tried to make a career change or up their CV by starring in movies.

For some it has paid off, for others it was a massive fail.

Here are five musicians who should have turned down that acting role and stuck to singing:

1. Mariah Carey

We all know MiMi can hit those high notes but her acting fell flat in her big screen debut in Glitter. It was a major flop at the box office. It cost $22m to make and only banked $5.2m. Critics tore the movie apart saying that it was one of the worst films ever. It has a 7% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Mariah went on to win a Razzie Award for worst actress at the 22nd Golden Raspberry Awards.

Sidenote: We totally forgot that rapper Da Brat was also in this movie.

2. Britney Spears

Remember the late 90s/early 2000 or better known as the golden age of Britney Spears. Riding on the wave of her pop stardom the singer embarked on road trip movie, Crossroads. Critics labelled the movie an extended music video and called it a train wreck. Britney won two Razzie awards for worst actress and worst original song at the 23rd Golden Raspberry Awards.

3. Kelly Clarkson

Fresh off being inaugurated as the first American Idol winner Kelly signed on to star in the musical From Justin to Kelly alongside fellow contestant Justin Guarini. The musical is basically a really bad version of a new age Grease. It was so bad that a special Golden Raspberry "Governor's Award" was created for it.

4. Lance Bass

Lance Bass took his boy band status to the big screen in On The Line. He played the lead role in the romantic comedy and his bandmate Joey Fatone played an aspiring musician (awkward). Both Lance and Joey's acting were off key. The film bombed at the box office and critics called it bland, predictable and emotionless.

5. Ja Rule

The rapper wanted to show off another side to in him in the Christian drama, I'm In Love with A Church Girl. He plays a wealthy drug dealer who meets a 'good church girl'. He tries to reform but the thug life proves to be hard to get out of. In all honesty this movie is a lot like a hip hop music video. Ja Rule's acting lacked conviction and his character's personality was as bland as a cardboard box. The film has a 6% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
