6 movies to get you in the Olympic spirit

Cape Town – Whether you're into sports or not the greatest sporting event that only comes every four years kicks off this week.

The 2016 Rio Olympics gets into full swing on Friday, 5 August.

The games have given birth to many inspiration stories of hard work and triumph. 

Here are 6 movies that will awaken the Olympian in you. 

1. Cool Runnings (1993)

The classic tale of four Jamaican athletes who set out to become the first Jamaican bobsled team to compete in the Winter Olympics.

2. Eddie the Eagle (2016)

Based on the true story of Michael “Eddie” Edwards, this underdog tale follows the true story of a British ski-jumper who never stopped believing in himself. He went on to compete in the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics.

3. Race (2016)

African American athlete Jesse Owens was  thrust onto the world stage of the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, where he faces off against Adolf Hitler’s vision of Aryan supremacy. He went on to win a record breaking four medals.

4. Foxcatcher (2014)

This true crime drama looks at the dark side of professional athleticism. An eccentric multi-millionaire recruits two 1984 U.S. Olympic gold medallist wrestlers to help coach U.S. wrestlers to participate in national, world, and Olympic competition.

5. Chariots of Fire (1980)

No Olympic themed movie list would be complete without this Academy Award winner. It tells the inspirational story of two athletes in the 1924 Olympics: Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams.

6. Breaking the Surface: The Greg Louganis Story (1997)

The television film tells the story of diver Greg Louganis. It tells the true life story of Greg's personal struggles and how he became one of the world's top Olympic divers. He won two gold medals in the 1984 Summer Olympics.
