6 new movies to see in SA cinemas this weekend

Cape Town – Escape into the magical world of The Nutcracker and the Four Realms in cinemas this weekend.

The adventure film is a retelling of E. T. A. Hoffmann's short story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King and Marius Petipa's The Nutcracker Ballet about a young girl who finds a Nutcracker doll among the family's gifts and is charged by her parents to take special care of it.

Also showing: Tyler Perry’s first R-rated comedy, a delightful romantic comedy, Sylvester Stallone tries to break someone out of prison, an internet meme comes to life in a horror film, and a local crime thriller.

(Note from editor: The local film, Tokoloshe is also showing in cinemas this weekend. Channel24 did not review the film as no pre-screening was made available to the media.)

Here are the 6 new films releasing in SA cinemas:

Movie: The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

Our rating: 3/5

Movie: Nobody’s Fool

Our rating: 1/5

Short review: Nobody’s Fool may be Tyler Perry’s first R-rated comedy but it’s as unfunny, uninspired and witless as anything he has ever put to film.

Tika Sumpter, Whoopi Goldberg and Tiffany Haddish

Movie: Juliet, Naked

Our rating: 4/5

Short review: The best Nick Hornby adaptation since About a Boy, the thoroughly delightful Juliet, Naked easily makes up for a contrived plot with tons of heart, laughs and charm, not to mention tons of killer tunes and a note-perfect cast.

Movie: Escape Plan 2

Our rating: 1/5

Short review: A pointless sequel with viciously cynical marketing behind it, Escape Plan 2 makes its forgettable predecessor look like the Great Escape.

Sylvester Stallone in the movie Escape Plan 2.

Movie: Slender Man

Our rating: 1/5

Short review: An incredibly cheap cash grab based on a problematic internet meme, no love for horror went into Slender Man except for cheap scares and screaming teenagers.

Taylor Richardson in the movie Slender Man.

Movie: Mayfair

Our rating: 4/5

Short review: The elements of this story are greatly compelling, and Sara Blecher methodically pulls each of these closer together to eventually become a tight and gripping conclusion.
