8 Oscar winners to watch on internet TV

Cape Town - While you wait for the 91st Academy Awards on DStv Now - either live-stream it at 03:00 on Monday, 25 February or, if that’s too ridiculous, at 21:00 on Monday night - watch these winners from recent years on Showmax, DStv Now and Netflix.

1. Selma (Showmax)

2015: Original Song

Despite new laws making it illegal, discrimination was still rife in 1965 America. When Dr Martin Luther King Jr and fellow activists marched from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, to change minds, what they ended up changing was the history of the United States. 

2. A Girl in the River (Showmax)

2016: Documentary, Short Subject

Saba is a 19-year-old woman, who, in 2016, became one of a thousand Pakistani women who faced lethal violence at the hands of a male relative for dishonouring their families. She survived being shot in the face by her uncle and thrown into a river, left for dead - and now she takes us into the dark world of honour killings.

3. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (DStv Now)

2018: Actress in a Leading Role, Actor in a Supporting Role

Frances McDormand performs in this compelling crime drama about a woman looking for justice. A mother challenges the local authorities to solve her daughter’s brutal murder. Available until 25 Feb 2019.

4. Get Out (DStv Now)

2018: Original Screenplay

Jordan Peele writes and directs this critically acclaimed psychological horror. A young man and his girlfriend travel to a secluded country estate to meet her parents. Once there, the wholesome atmosphere gives way to a nightmare. Available until 2 Mar 2019.

5. Spotlight (DStv Now)

2016: Motion Picture of the Year, Original Screenplay

Powerful performances from an all-star cast earned this biopic the Oscar for Best Picture. A newspaper uncovers a huge child molestation scandal that rocked the Catholic church. Available until 13 Feb 2020.

6. The White Helmets (Netflix)

2017: Documentary, Short Subject

A group of civilians in Syria risk everything to pull victims out of the rubble during and after the relentless airstrikes that pound their homes day in and day out.

7. Argo (Netflix)

2013: Motion Picture of the Year, Adapted Screenplay, Film Editing

During the US hostage crisis in Tehran, Iran, in 1979, a CIA agent goes undercover as a Hollywood film producer to rescue six American diplomats. Ben Affleck directed this drama-thriller based on real-life historical events.

8. Icarus (Netflix)

2018: Documentary Feature

When Bryan Fogel started investigating the use of doping to win an amateur cycling race, he never imagined what he would uncover. Enlisting the help of a Russian scientist at an anti-doping laboratory, Fogel stumbles on a major international doping conspiracy that has been at play for decades.

The 91st Academy Awards will be broadcast on M-Net Movies Premiere (DStv 104) from 03:00 on Monday morning, 25 February, with a delayed broadcast later on the same day on M-Net (DStv 101) at 21:00.
