Cape Town – The latest instalment of the wildly successful Twilight franchise Breaking Dawn Part 1 has broken records on its first night of release in South Africa.
The vampire romance opened nationwide in 45 theatres with midnight screenings taking place on Tuesday night. The film grossed R700 000 on its first night.
That makes The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1’s midnight screening on November 16 the most successful midnight screening of any film in South Africa thus far.

Hundreds of excited teenagers descended on the Nu Metro theatres at Canal Walk shopping centre in order to see the penultimate film of the Twilight Saga.
According to Senior Publicity Manager Heather Vorster of Nu Metro Films - the film's local distributors – 14 320 people attended the first screening across the country.
"We are very happy with the turnout. We are positive that Breaking Dawn will continue to draw many viewers to theatres for a long time," she said.
