Disney reveals new info on Star Wars films

Los Angeles -  Star Wars fans have more than just Episodes 7, 8 and 9 to look forward to.

Disney CEO Bob Iger said at the annual shareholders meeting in Phoenix on Wednesday that the company is developing "some standalone movies" featuring several Star Wars characters in the near future.

Carrie Fisher, who starred as Princess Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy, also revealed that she would be returning to the franchise.

During an interview with Palm Beach Illustrated, Fisher confirmed that she will be reprise her role in the JJ Abrams-directed film, which is likely to be released in 2015.

Fever pitch levels

Joking about how she thinks Princess Leia would be like in Star Wars: Episode VII, Fisher said: "Elderly. She's in an intergalactic old folks' home. I just think she would be just like she was before, only slower and less inclined to be up for the big battle."

During the meeting, Iger didn't reveal if Fisher or other old favourites would be returning to franchise.

The news is likely to set off a new round of speculation about what's in store for the Lucasfilm franchise. The buzz has been at fever pitch levels since The Walt Disney Co said in October it was acquiring the studio for $4bn.

Iger didn't say which characters might be featured in the standalone films. Some Star Wars characters such as bounty hunter Boba Fett have been given bigger treatments in comic books.
