Cape Town – Sony Pictures Entertainment has released the very first image of new Spider-Man Andrew Garfield in the famed superhero costume.
The scene sees a battered and bruised Peter Parker walking along a desolate city street at night with raindrops falling around him.
It is the first official image of Garfield in the role made famous by Tobey Maguire in three Spider-Man movies. The as-yet untitled fourth instalment serves as a prequel to the first Spider-Man movie and no details on the plot have been released yet.
It is expected that Rhys Ifans and Irrfan Khan will, respectively, play villains named Lizard and Proto-Goblin.
Garfield, who has been nominated for a Golden Globe for his role in The Social Network, recently shared his fears about taking on the Marvel superhero role. "I'm very, very excited and nervous about Spider-Man – I'm working hard to make sure I don't mess it up – physically, mentally, emotionally," he told Total Film magazine.
"It means as much to me as it does to everyone else. I can objectively look at myself and be like, 'You better not screw this up man. I'm going to be so pissed off with you if you do."
Spider-Man 4 is expected to release in 3D in July 2012.
