First look: Johnny Depp in Lone Ranger

Cape Town - Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed the first official image of Armie Hammer as the Lone Ranger and Johnny Depp as his Native American sidekick Tonto.

The Lone Ranger is based on the popular TV series of the same name that ran in the US from 1949-1957, starring Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels.

Producer Bruckheimer tweeted the picture along with the message: "Tonto and The Lone Ranger Ride Again!"

The image reveals The Social Network star Hammer in the Lone Ranger's signature black mask and wearing a US sheriff badge.

To his right, Depp is almost unrecognisable as Tonto in full Native American make-up and wearing a full, feathered headdress. Even more curiously, a black crow is perched on his head.

The Lone Ranger is directed by Gore Verbinski, who won an Oscar this year for his animated feature Rango, which also starred Depp. The project had been stuck in development for many years until Disney announced in 2008 that Depp was attached to the film. Production was also shut down in August last year due to mysterious circumstances.

The movie also stares Helena Bonham Carter, Berry Pepper and Tom Wilkinson.

It is expected to release in the US on May 31 2013 and in July 2013 in South Africa.
