Cape Town - The first full-length trailer for the long-awaited Nelson Mandela biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom has been released.
The movie stars British actor Idris Elba (Pacific Rim, The Wire) as Nelson Mandela and is based on Mandela’s bestselling autobiography Long Walk to Freedom, published in 1994 at the advent of a newly democratic South Africa.
The new trailer comes soon after the release of a short teaser, which showed an aged Mandela walking among the hills of the Eastern Cape as small children play.
The new film, directed by Justin Chadwick (The Other Boleyn Girl, The First Grader), centres on the beloved South African leader’s humble beginnings in Qunu, his coming of age and romance with Winnie Madikizela (played by Skyfall star Naomie Harris) - who would become his second wife, his education and political uprising during apartheid and his imprisonment for 27 years.
The trailer paints Mandela as South Africa’s "Public enemy #1" who was hunted by police and feared by the government for his revolutionary beliefs. Disturbing scenes of the 1960 Sharpeville massacre are cut with scenes of Mandela declaring that he no longer believes in peaceful resistance, leading to explosive attacks against the apartheid government.
Mandela is seen being arrested and sentenced at the Rivonia Trial, before being shipped off to Robben Island for his life imprisonment.
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom also stars Fana Mokoena as Govan Mbeki, Tony Kgoroge as Walter Sisulu, Riaad Moosa as Ahmed Kathrada, and Gys de Villiers as FW De Klerk.
The movie, produced by Anant Singh's Videovision, is set for release in South Africa on 6 December.
