Greatest comedy of all time named

2011-09-15 18:11

London - This Is Spinal Tap has been voted the greatest movie comedy of all time.

The 1984 cult mockumentary - which was directed by Rob Reiner and featured a cast of unknowns playing a spoof band who made much of the script up on the spot - beat Airplane! into second place in a poll by Time Out magazine.

Time Out critic David Jenkins said: "It's sublimely funny and sharp - a comedy built for the long haul which matures with each viewing. It's so perfectly constructed and performed, the characters so rich and realistic, that it's initially a challenge to determine the dividing line between reality and fiction."

When Spinal Tap was released some viewers were convinced the fake group - which had a tendency to lose drummers in increasingly more bizarre accidents - were a genuine band.

Monty Python's Life of Brian came third while Annie Hall, Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Withnail and I also featured in the top 10.

Voters taking part in the poll included Ghostbusters star Dan Aykroyd, Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright and The Office co-creator Stephen Merchant.

Time Out's Top Ten comedy films:

1. This Is Spinal Tap

2. Airplane!

3. Monty Python's Life of Brian

4. Annie Hall

5. Monty Python and the Holy Grail

6. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy

7. Withnail and I

8. Groundhog Day

9. Some Like it Hot

10. The Jerk

      JMan - 2011-09-16 08:21

Ja nee...some good ones in there...but 'GREATEST OF ALL TIME'??? Meh.. :\

  • Utopian - 2011-09-15 18:42

Absolute ignorant rubbish. In comedy, Peter Sellers was in a class of his own. Any five minutes of The Party, for example, has more merit that this whole movie. And that wasn't even his best. People simply don't take the trouble of investigating, and the media unwittingly manipulate the polls by providing incomplete information about the movies that are out there.

      pop101 - 2011-09-16 10:22

The best was in the beginning of The Party - Trumpet man behind dune just couldn't die. You know that feeling where you feel you tummy muscles cramp up and you are never going the get your breath back.

  • I Like Everything - 2011-09-15 19:03

...and it was easier to report on some dof list that someone else sucked out of their thumbs than create a facebook questionaire and find out for yourselves. duh.

      daaivark - 2011-09-16 07:43

and of course that would reflect the views of everyone..... Polls are ALWAYS subjective within the parameters of the sample group. Anyone that reads the result as gospel is just thick. It presents a set of opinions, which on the whole reflect the fact that ten movied were amusing.

  • Janine - 2011-09-15 23:18

    What about Harold and Maude?

  • daaivark - 2011-09-16 07:45

COmedy will always be a matter of subjective taste. We all have our favourites, but why should everyone agree. Life would be so boring.

  • Frans Liebenberg - 2011-09-16 08:10

      Fred - 2011-09-16 11:01

Try again idiot, not only are you stupid you're a racist as well, Dan Aykroyd is American, don't know the other guy, but Merchant and the Office won worldwide acclaim, it been so good that the Americans bought it and copied the show, I'm yet to see any South African comedy hit the world movie seen, the reason they haven't is that most are infantile cr8p

  • Shaheema - 2011-09-16 10:41

They should've taken this list to 11.

  • maceye - 2011-09-16 11:15

I always thought "A fish called Wanda" was brilliant. Judging by the responses, it seems everyone agrees. John Cleese, Michael Palin and Kevin Kline all in the same movie, it had to be good. The "fish and chips" scene was just classic.

  • - 2011-09-16 12:07
