Iron Man 3 goes dark in new trailer

Los Angeles - Iron Man 3 will be more about Tony Stark than Iron Man.

The latest film in the Marvel film franchise will explore the eccentric billionaire superhero's human side rather than his alter-ego following his brush with death in last year's The Avengers.

The film's co-writer Drew Pearce explained to Empire magazine: "Part of Tony's journey in the movie is to try to find out who he is away from the suit. He started off as Tony Stark, he went into a cave, he came out as Iron Man. Where did Tony go? That's what we're dealing with in this film."

Nearly died sacrificing himself

Marvel have also released a brand new trailer for the film which delves further into Tony's inner turmoil.

The movie will see Tony - played by Robert Downey Jr - in a contemplative, traumatised state after the events of The Avengers, in which the character nearly died sacrificing himself to save the planet, and Iron Man 3 will see him dealing with the fallout.

Drew added: "After The Avengers, he's relying on these suits to feel like he's in any way capable. He surrounds himself with these things almost like a blanket. In The Avengers, he fought aliens but he was the one character I would not have picked to fight aliens.

"Now we've taken advantage of he fact that he's fought aliens and he talks about it."

Marvel Studio president Kevin Feige also revealed the film will centre solely on Iron Man originals Tony, Pepper Potts, played by Gwyneth Paltrow, and Rhodey, played by Don Cheadle, despite Tony Stark coming together with Thor, the Hulk and Captain America in The Avengers.

He said: "I wanted the first post-Avengers film to showcase the individuals. From the get-go when we started meeting with filmmakers, we said, 'No Nick Fury, no Hulk, no [Black] Widow.' This is Stark, Pepper, Rhodey, Tony's world."
