Johannesburg - The Walt Disney Company Africa announced that leading local celebrity fashion designer Diaan Daniels will create the unique designs of one of South Africa’s youngsters as they participate in the first ever South African Disney Princess Design-a-dress competition.

The competition sees Disney, together with Mattel and Toys R Us, offering young girls the opportunity to not only design a Disney Princess-inspired dress, but have the opportunity to wear it themselves!

Until Saturday 3 May 2014, youngsters can submit their designs via the competition’s website or in-store at all Toys R Us nationwide. Following the competition closing on 3 May 2014, a round of judging the entries will result in Diaan being handed the winning design. The weeks that follow will see the fashion designer translating and transforming the inspiration into two finished bespoke pieces – one for the winner’s own Disney princess Doll and another for the winner.

In his prolific 14-year career, Diaan Daniels has become synonymous with opulent style, creativity and award-winning designs. From being the number 1 go-to designer for South Africa’s glitterati, Diaan has become renowned for his dazzling wedding and evening gowns, as well as his men’s and ladies formal, cocktail and corporate wear. He recently opened his atelier at The Pivot Hotel (Monte Casino) in Johannesburg and is preparing his own ready-to-wear retail brand, due to launch in stores in October.

The range of Diaan’s talent’s continues to touch all aspects of the design world, with Diaan designing and crafting his own jewellery range – so his expansive expertise is well lent to creating the finished pieces of the winner’s designs for the Disney Princess Design-a-dress competition.

Having been inspired by the very first Disney Princess, Cinderella, Diaan is revelling in the opportunity to bring a young girl’s dream to reality. "As I was growing up, my favourite Disney Princess was Cinderella as she encompassed all the aspects of realising your dreams, a true inspiration for what I had planned for myself in becoming a fashion designer," says Diaan. "The essence of the Disney Princess moulded my direction for my evening and wedding gown ranges – I am truly living the dream of a prince!"

Intrepid young designers can log onto the Disney Princess website to start those creative juices flowing – only limit is the designer’s imagination and the eleven Disney Princesses will offer fantastic inspiration.

Young fashion designers can log on to the website or visit any Toys R Us branch nationwide from 7 April through 3 May 2014.
