'Nolan's Batman trilogy is boring'

Los Angeles - David Cronenberg says Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy is "mostly boring".

The Cosmopolis director slammed his fellow director's three action movies - Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, which star Christian Bale as the titular character - criticising the filmmaker for spending so much money on the franchise, which he believes simply portrays the superhero "running around in a stupid cape".

He said: "I don't think they are making them an elevated art form. I think it's still Batman running around in a stupid cape. I just don't think it's elevated. Christopher Nolan's best movie is Memento, and that is an interesting movie.

"I don't think his Batman movies are half as interesting though they're 20 million times the expense. What he is doing is some very interesting technical stuff, which, you know, he's shooting IMAX and in 3D. That's really tricky and difficult to do.

"I read about it in American Cinematography Magazine, and technically, that's all very interesting. The movie, to me, they're mostly boring."

David also hit out at people who are trying to suggest The Dark Knight Rises is a piece of "supreme cinema art" because he believes the superhero movie is mainly aimed at kids.

He added to Next Movie: "A superhero movie, by definition, you know, it's comic book. It's for kids. It's adolescent in its core.

"That has always been its appeal, and I think people who are saying, you know, ''Dark Knight Rises' is, you know, supreme cinema art.' I don't think they know what the fuck they're talking about."

    Jealousy makes you nasty!

Superhero movies ARE about people running around in \stupid capes\. When I go watch them, I certainly don't expect to see Susan Sarandon dying in a hospital bed telling her husband how much she loves him.

Ha ha !! Brilliant. Nice one Lunga.

I found them interesting first time, boring the next... Good films yes, but I'll agree to an extent in the way there is no 're-watchability'... And I'm a huge comicbook fan.\r\n\r\nAnd imo, these films are aimed mainly at those kids who read comics and at 25 to 30 years old now watch the film.

I agree absolutely. The Dark Knight Rises was utter crap. I seriously struggled not to fall asleep during the film. Memento on the other hand was clever and captivating.

The Dark Knight was a brilliant movie and anyone who has actually read the Batman comic knows it has a very dark feel to it, the idea that comics and visual novels are only for kids is very naive and they have appeal that makes them stand the test of time. Let's face it Cronenberg is not so great of a director that he can start criticising, in fact he hasn't made anything decent since "The Fly" which wasn't exactly an artistic masterpiece. I wasn't that excited about a third film especially after seeing Bane but I can't comment till I've seen it. it.

Where do you find such idiots? Batman was one of the best movies this year, chances are if you didn't enjoy 1 or 2 you wouldn't enjoy this one,but then again no name brand directors with movies you've never heard of can't be expected not to be jealous of nolan's success with the films

Have to agree and disagree with you there. David Cronenberg is hardly a nobody director, directing classics such as The Fly and A History of Violence. Know your directors! And yes, they were good movies (The Dark Knight Rises was a bit mediocre compared to the others though) but they weren't the best out there. No need for him to be jealous. Why would he be???

THANK YOU CRONENBERG! tell it like it is, these newer movies suck ass. the older ones with michael keaton and val kilmer were better comic book films because they knew what they were trying to be and that is FUN ACTION MOVIES. the new ones are so pretentious and trying so hard to be different that it seems rediculous. aside from clooney, christian bales the worst batman with the ugly stupid looking suit and dumb voice, that terrible tank thing and heath ledger was stupid too, he wasnt playing the joker he was just a terrorist in drag. JACK NICHOLSON IS THE BEST JOKER PERIOD. tim burton FTW, ill even watch the fun slick joel schumacher ones over nolans boring bland batmans. cant believe the hype around them, THEY ARE NOTHING SPECIAL! its like watching a law & order CSI episode that happens to have batman in it. so lame! what ever happened to HE STOLE MY BALOONS! BURN, BABY, BURN! RIDDLE ME THIS RIDDLE ME THAT, WHOS AFRAID OF THE BIG BLACK BAT! those are the batmans i miss!

...Dude, are you Serious ? Wait...let me rephrase that . Are you retarded ? I mean, Tim Burton's Adaptations weren't bad, but nothing amazing. Though to say that you would prefer any of the Joel Schumacher versions over Nolan's Films, is reason enough to get your head checked. "Batman Forever" was bad enough. It scored 5.4/10 on IMDB; 42% on Rottentomatoes; & 51% on Metacritic. But the biggest f*ckup ever, was "Batman & Robin". It scored 3.6/10 on IMDB; 12% on Rottentomatoes; 28% on Metacritic & was voted the worst movie ever made, by Empire Magazine. And watching it has clearly resulted in the death of many of your Brain Cells.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed Nolan's Batman trilogy, I do think that The Dark Knight Rises is a tad overrated. To suggest that it is a piece of "Cinematic Art" is going a bit far. Though, it has to be said that David Cronenberg is A NOBODY compared to Nolan. Although he has directed some fairly decent films, he is pretty average overall. His most recent picture: Cosmopolis has received poor reviews. I do agree though that Memento was Nolan's best Picture.
