Cape Town – A new Afrikaans musical film titled Pretville by the creators of hit movie Liefling, is set to hit theatres in time for Christmas in 2012.
Where Liefling followed the tradition of musicals such as Mamma Mia!, Pretville will be set in the 1950's and will feature music ranging from rock n roll to doo-wop, ducktails and poodle skirts.
The film will draw on the tradition of musicals such as Grease and Hairspray.
The cast is an ensemble of successful recording artists and actors. Steve Hofmeyr, Emo Adams, Jakkie Louw, Willem Botha, Lizz Meiring, Anette Engelbrecht and Margit Meyer-Rödenbeck have all signed up for roles. Marlee van der Merwe, Eugene Jensen and Marno van der Merwe have been cast in the lead roles.
Marlee vand der Merwe will be remembered for her role as Melanie in Liefling, the blonde who constantly tries to interfere in Jan and Liefling's relationship.
Original songs
More than 28 original songs have been written for the film by composer and songwriter Machiel Roets. Roets recently returned from London where he acted as musical director in a number of pantomimes and musicals.
Pretville, according to Roets, is a small town where everyone knows each other and there is a lot of intrigue.
"I think the film will resonate with all South Africans or Afrikaans speakers. It is a musical comedy."
Steve Hofmeyr will play the part of Eddie Electric, a famous singer who returns to his hometown. Liz Meiring will play Lolly, the owner of the local sweet shop, while Terence Bridgett will play Pierre Lukuveer, the local barber and town mayor.
Filming is set to commence in February.
