Reese Witherspoon to play Tinkerbell

Los Angeles - Reese Witherspoon will play Tinkerbell in Disney's live-action remake of the film.

The 39-year-old actress will star as the little fairy - made famous in Peter Pan - in Tink, and will be replacing Elizabeth Banks, who has been attached to the film since 2010, as the producer as well, alongside Victoria Strouse - co-writer of Pixar's upcoming Finding Dory - writing the script.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, this latest take on Tinkerbell will "play with the idea and timeline of the well-known Peter Pan narrative," and will take the angle of telling "the story you don't know", just like Maleficent did with Angelina Jolie. However, Tink is being developed with a more modest mid-range budget as opposed to Maleficent''s $180m and Cinderella's $95m.

Since Elizabeth announced she was playing Tinkerbell with a "mischievous nature" in 2010, Disney has released Maleficent, Jack and the Beanstalk and Cinderella as live-action movies.

Disney has also announced upcoming remakes of Dumbo, Mulan, Pinocchio and The Little Mermaid, as well as the cast for a remake of Beauty and the Beast, including Emma Watson, Ewan McGregor, Ian McKellen and Emma Thompson, production of which will begin later this year with the film scheduled to open in March 2017.
