Johannesburg - It was a success all round for the South African cast, crew and producers of Shotgun Garfunkel, unofficially the fastest film ever made – from scriptwriting through to premiere in under 11 days.
Three local production companies – Localala Productions, Ghost Sheep and Team Best – who set out the mammoth task of breaking the previous record held in India and produce a full-length feature film, all the way from script conception, to casting, filming, editing and screening of the final product – in 10 days and 12 hours days in Johannesburg.
Scriptwriting for the film started on 1 May and the film premiered on Saturday, 11 May.
After an intense few days, the film Shotgun Garfunkel was successfully completed in time for the movie's big premiere at The Bioscope in Johannesburg on Saturday night, with time to spare in breaking the record set by the Indian makers of Sivappu Mazhai.
'Working as a team helped'
"It was tight," said Eduan van Jaarsveld, a producer and actor on the film told TimesLive. "We had to get rid of any insecurity and just dive in. We didn't have the time or energy to not trust what we were doing, and working as a team helped a great deal."
"Localala, Team Best, Ghost Sheep and everyone else who sacrificed time and energy to create this piece of SA cinematic awesomeness / history – I salute you and we need more passionate Safricans like you. I love you," said Retroviral's Mike Sharman, who also has a role in the film.
Shotgun Garfunkel is a buddy comedy that tells of four thirtysomething friends on a night out as they try to recapture their glory days.
The movie also stars Jenna Dover, Carl Beukes, writer Meren Reddy, comedian Trevor Gumbi, Tiffany Jones Barbuzano, and producers Bryan van Niekerk and Asher Stoltz.
The movie is only holds the title of The Fastest Film Ever Made unofficially as they await certification from the Guinness Book of World Records.
For writer Reddy, it's a platform for the next step in South African filmmaking. He said: "It's about the knowledge that we could do it, and we did it with a 15-man team, backed by this amazing city. We could do it, and we did. We fucking did it."
