SA vampire flick seeks fan funding

Cape Town – The producers of Bloedsuiers, a new South African movie currently in production, are proposing a bold new strategy to secure funding – they are calling on fans to become investors in the movie.

Bloedsuiers is an Afrikaans vampire horror, starring Inge Beckmann, Rob van Vuuren, Francois van Coke and André Roothmann, that tells the story of vampire hunters in Cape Town. Three gory teaser trailers for the movie have already gone viral.

The "crowd-funding" campaign is being run on the Bloedsuiers website and calls on anyone to register on the site by noon on March 7, which will gain them access to a special members area where they will receive exclusive content, rewards and entry into various competitions which will not be open to the public. Some of the competition prizes include concert tickets, dinner with the cast and a chance to appear in the movie itself.

Set a trend

According to Bloedsuiers producer Benjamin Cowley, the principle behind the campaign is to involve their audience in the filmmaking process. "We want to be able to interact with audience members and get a fair idea of what their expectations are so that we can deliver on those, and more," Cowley said.

Cowley also said that they wanted to make a independent movie that would allow the filmmakers complete creative control. "In the current global economic conditions it is extremely difficult for independent filmmakers to produce for the market, so we have opted to involve the audience and produce something they want to see and hopefully set up a viable trend for future filmmakers in South Africa," he said.

He would not disclose what the proposed budget for the movie is, nor how much money they hoped to raise through the crowd-funding campaign, but said that it would contribute 50% of the budget.

The minimum buy-in for the campaign is R30 and any amount above this can be pledged on the site through a secure online payment facility.
