Skyfall becomes UK's biggest ever film

London - Skyfall has become the highest grossing film of all time in the UK.

Sam Mendes' latest chapter in the James Bond saga has broken all British box office records after raking in a massive £94 277 612 in just 40 days, knocking previous title-holder Avatar off the top spot.

Producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli expressed their delight at the news with a statement saying: "We're overwhelmed with gratitude to the cinema-going audiences in the UK who have made Skyfall the highest grossing film of all time. We are very proud of this film and thank everybody, especially Daniel Craig and Sam Mendes, who have contributed to its success."

The 23rd film in the 007 franchise - which stars Daniel Craig, Dame Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Berenice Marlohe and Javier Bardem - looks likely to remain in cinemas for some time since it accumulated the staggering sum in just five weeks of its release date.

James Cameron's 3D sci-fi epic Avatar previously held the UK record after grossing £94 025 632 overall during its full 11-month run in cinemas, Empire reports.

Skyfall has currently taken $870m worldwide, largely surpassing the $599m Bond record set by Casino Royale in 2006.
