Cape Town - Ster Kinekor is in the lead with digital conversion in SA.

The cinema chain announced on Wednesday that they have completed their digital conversion, with over 400 cinema screens now hosting a digital projector.

The 35mm projector, which has had a long run as the primary equipment used in screenings, has been effectively retired. With the new projectors, the picture quality and clarity have improved and Ster Kinekor has also upgraded its sound systems ranging from Dolby 5.1 to Dolby Atmos.

Cited as the company's largest investment to date, the conversion was started in June this year and they finished with the last cinema in Kimberley this week.

CEO Fiaz Mohamed applauded their quick work. "As far as we are aware, this is the fastest successful digital conversion process for any cinema chain of our size anywhere in the world.

"Furthermore, we managed to continue running our normal day-to-day operations across all our cinemas during the upgrade, with the minimum of disruption."

With the release of Thor: The Dark World, it was also the first time that Ster Kinekor distributed a movie solely in digital, with no 35mm prints.

Due to your upgrades, will my popcorn and coke still cost an arm and a leg or will you require kidneys as well?

So now you guys just need to fix the other problems. like, bad (as in no) service at the booking counter, stale popcorn, staff forgetting to turn off the lights when the movie starts, movie drifting off the screen and showing partly on the wall, torn screens, torn and badly stitched screen and no staff to be found anywhere to correct any of the above. And this was just at Eastgate! And the last THREE movies in a row! No wonder the movies house was all but empty on each occasion.

yoh shame! Here in Cpt the 3 that i regularly go to are run pretty well. But their refreshment prices still put a dent in my wallet... Nu metros this side are run horrificly

Not to mention the disgusting arm rests. Next time you go to the movies make sure to check out the armrests while the lights are still on; some of them have stuff living on there I tell you. Then there's the pieces of snot on the bottom of the seat. The last time I went to the movies the aircon was set to arctic, it was like -50 in there.

Movie evening out is not what it used to be. Very inconsistent experience, picture cut-off screen, bad audio to name a few. Not Always better on the Big screen ! SK lets restore that wonderful cinematic experience of the days gone by or lose to VoD.

And i wonder how much are we gonna pay now for the snacks and refreshements?
